The market leader in the field of wood-based materials production has commissioned us to supply an energy centre for a chipboard and OSB production facility in Romania. This is to provide process heat for the chipboard continuous press, stack press, sifter and other small consumers. Primarily OSB production waste is to be used as fuel.

The wood waste used for combustion contains various organic substances that are used in wood fibre processing, e.g. for gluing or liquid application. Therefore, a flexible INTEC firing system with a capacity of 31.5 MW, consisting of a 4-zone feed grate firing system and an injection firing system above the grate with a firing capacity of 4.5 MW, was used, which is specially designed for the incineration of heterogeneous production waste. The 4-zone configuration enables efficient combustion and temperature control and the injection firing system ensures complete and efficient combustion of fine particles and dusts that are produced in large quantities during wood processing. An adiabatic combustion chamber minimises heat loss, ensures even temperature distribution and improves combustion efficiency. The heat energy generated is transferred to the thermal oil in the waste heat boiler (19.5 MW), which circulates in a closed system and heats the production facilities. Part of the heat generated is used to produce hot gas (10.5 MW) for the chip dryer.

The exhaust gases from the combustion process transfer the energy to a heat transfer oil system in a total of 4 tube bundle heat exchangers, which heats the production systems such as the chipboard continuous press, short-cycle coating presses and supplies other systems such as sifters with the required thermal energy. The cooled exhaust gas - after the heat transfer oil has been heated - still has residual heat, which is used to preheat press exhaust air to prevent it from falling below the dew point. The preheated press exhaust air is fed to the grate firing system as combustion air. Before being fed into the chimney, the exhaust gas from the energy centre is mixed with exhaust air from the dryer and cleaned in an electrostatic precipitator. Parallel to the commissioning of the biomass combustion plant, INTEC was commissioned to supply a natural gas-fired heat transfer oil heater with a net output of 10 MW. This direct-fired heat transfer oil heater was to be integrated into the same heat transfer oil system as a standby boiler to serve as a start-up boiler and for heat transfer oil heating during maintenance work.
